Burkina Faso cultivates grains like millet, sorghum, maize, rice, and fonio. Millet and sorghum are staples due to drought resilience; maize thrives in wetter areas, enhancing food security; rice is popular in urban areas and grown in irrigated regions, and fonio aids sustainable farming in sandy soils while combating desertification.
According to preliminary estimates by the Ministry of Agriculture, grain production in Burkina Faso is expected to reach 6,077,227 tonnes in the 2024/2025 agricultural season.
Compared to the previous season, this represents an 18% increase in yield, and a 21.4% increase compared to the average production over the past five years.
