According to the WHO, between October 24 and December 5, 2024, 406 cases of the unknown disease were recorded in the Panzi health zone of Kwango province. Of these, 31 deaths were recorded. The majority of reported cases were children, especially those under the age of five.
The DRC's the Public Health Emergency Operations Center (COUSP) is investigating the unknown disease and has the situation under control, COUSP coordinator Christian Ngandu, according to local media reports.

"As soon as the COUSP received the alert, a national team of epidemiologists, biologists, health professionals and infection prevention and control specialists were dispatched to the site," a local media outlet quoted Ngandu as saying.

The situation is now stabilizing thanks to the response of health experts, the coordinator explained.
The investigation was launched in response to concerns about an increase in deaths from an unknown disease in the Panzi health zone in the DRC's Kwango province, according to local media reports.
Experts are working with provincial and local teams to intensify epidemiological and biological investigations, provide patient care, and protect vulnerable populations, Ngandu added, emphasizing the importance of strengthening coordination meetings at the provincial level.
"To effectively coordinate the response, we have engaged local leaders, particularly the president of Kwango Civil Society. All stakeholders are committed to taking appropriate measures to protect and care for people affected by this febrile disease of unknown etiology," he said.
Local authorities previously reported 143 deaths in November from an unidentified illness with similar symptoms, including breathing difficulties and anemia.
Symptoms include headache, cough, fever, breathing difficulties, and anemia.
