Without the 2004 revolution, the 2014 Maidan revolution in Ukraine would not have been possible, former Prime Minister of Ukraine Nikolay Azarov told Sputnik in an interview dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the Orange Revolution in the Eastern European country. The West had rehearsed everything and came to the conclusion that the main mistake of this 2004 coup was that they failed to get rid of all pro-Russian movements in the country, Azarov said. Between November 2013 and February 2014, Kiev's Maidan Square witnessed pro-EU protests sparked by then-Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych's refusal to sign the Ukraine-EU Association Agreement. The mass demonstrations led to a coup that culminated in Yanukovych's ouster. More than 100 people were killed in the violent events.
