TEHRAN (Sputnik) - Iran has been slapped with thousands of sanctions by the United States and other Western countries over the last 45 years since the Islamic Revolution in the country.
The United States must pay Iran about one trillion dollars for sanctions that have hindered the development of the Islamic Republic for 25 years, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' (IRGC, elite units of the Armed Forces) deputy chief for legal affairs, Sohrab-Ali Shamkhani, said.
"The United States must compensate Iran one trillion dollars for the fact that for 25 years they did not allow the Islamic Republic to develop due to sanctions," Iranian news agency Etemad-e Online quoted Shamkhani as saying.
In April, the United States imposed new sanctions on Iran, targeting the country’s UAV program, steel and automobile industries in response to Tehran's retaliatory strike on Israel, the US Department of the Treasury said.
Iran's attack came in response to Israel's airstrike on the Iranian consulate in the Syrian capital in early April, according to Iranian authorities.
