Cuban engineers restored electricity supply to 70% of customers of the state grid company, Union Electrica, the Cuban Ministry of Energy and Mines said. On Friday, the Cuban government said that a failure at the Antonio Guiteras Power Plant in the western province of Matanzas had shut down the electrical grid, causing a nationwide blackout. Parts of the grid were briefly brought back online over the weekend before going down again.Cuba is suffering its worst economic crisis since the 1990s, marked by soaring inflation and shortages of basic goods, reports said. The island's electricity is generated by eight aging coal-fired power stations, some of which have broken down or are undergoing maintenance, as well as seven floating plants leased from Turkish companies and an array of diesel-powered generators, according to media.

10:16 23.10.2024 (Updated: 13:23 23.10.2024) MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The electricity grid in Cuba was reportedly cut off on Friday after the collapse of the Antonio Guiteras Power Plant, about 100 kilometers from Havana.
Cuban engineers restored electricity supply to 70% of customers of the state grid company, Union Electrica, the Cuban Ministry of Energy and Mines said.
"The process of restoring the National Energy System: this morning at 06:00, 70.89% of Union Electrica consumers in Cuba had electricity. Today, the strengthening of the established systems and the expansion of the country's electricity coverage continues," the ministry said on X on Tuesday.
