As BRICS prepares to meet in Kazan, Russia, in October, many countries have expressed interest in joining the group of the world's leading emerging economies, which underwent a historic round of expansion on January 1, 2024.
BRICS should be transformed into the main driver of the interests of the global majority, said Dmitry Suslov, Deputy Director of the Center for Comprehensive European and International Studies at the Moscow Higher School of Economics, speaking at the session "Expanded BRICS: New Components of Global Stability" at the ongoing Eastern Economic Forum (EEF).
He noted that the BRICS expansion shows the irreversibility of the formation of a multipolar world. At the same time, according to the analyst, after the expansion, the association is at a kind of "fork in the road."

"And it has two alternative ways of further development. The first way, which of course I consider more preferable, is to maintain and even increase the intensity of cooperation and to make BRICS the main engine and institution of global governance and global governance reform in the interests of the world majority, in the interests of the developing countries of the world," he said.

Suslov, who is also an expert at the Valdai Club think tank, added: "There is a question in the program about how BRICS should position itself after the expansion. This is how it should be: it is the vanguard of the world majority."

The Russian expert suggested that a second, less desirable option for BRICS is to become a "loose discussion club." This would mean becoming a prestigious group with no binding commitments or decision-making power, effectively rendering it ineffective.
According to Suslov, in order to follow the right path and avoid the second, three main priorities are needed, including the focus on global governance reform, increasing BRICS flexibility, and slowing down BRICS expansion.
Moreover, according to Suslov, BRICS must create a new ecosystem of trade, economic and financial relations in the world – "not against the West, but without it."
In addition, he emphasized that the BRICS should not "turn into an analog of the UN General Assembly, because this would devalue the function of the association."
The Eastern Economic Forum began on Tuesday and will run through Friday. It is being hosted by the Far Eastern Federal University in Vladivostok. Sputnik is the general information partner of the EEF 2024.
