Earlier this week, the UN warned that a record drought connected to the El Niño weather phenomenon, which has devastated crops across Southern Africa, caused millions of people to go hungry, and forced five countries to declare national disasters, is entering its worst stage.
The Zimbabwean government has successfully delivered food supplies to over seven million people facing food insecurity across the country as the nation grapples with an
El Niño-induced drought.
The effort, coordinated with the World Food Programme (WFP) and other UN agencies, comes in response to a national and regional appeal for aid to address the food deficit.
The government conducted a comprehensive assessment of the situation and identified more than 6 million people in rural areas and 1.7 million in urban areas in need of assistance.
"Under the Food Deficit Mitigation Programme, the Government is targeting 7.7 million people in both rural and urban areas who were projected to be food insecure," Minister of Public Service, Labor, and Social Welfare July Moyo said.
Meanwhile, the government has launched a "Drought Flash Appeal," seeking US$429.3 million in aid from humanitarian partners to support an estimated 3.1 million people.
This appeal is part of a broader national effort to raise US$3.3 billion to address the crisis and build resilience to future challenges.
