The West African country is currently facing outbreaks of cholera and Lassa fever. Both diseases have claimed the lives of at least 216 people, according to the latest data from the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control and Prevention.
Russian consumer rights and human wellbeing watchdog Rospotrebnadzor is monitoring the situation in Nigeria, where an outbreak of an unknown disease has been identified, the agency’s press service told reporters.
"According to unofficial sources, an outbreak of an unknown disease has been reported in the Nigerian community of Kulani, Gombe State, affecting more than 50 residents. The disease is characterized by headaches, fever, abdominal pain, and jaundice. The causes of the disease are currently unknown. Experts from Rospotrebnadzor are keeping the information about the unknown disease in Nigeria under control," the statement said.
According to local media reports this week, an unidentified disease outbreak has resulted in the deaths of 12 individuals and hospitalized 50 residents. Dr. Israel James and Yakubu Maina informed the press that the illness is not cholera, but they have collected blood and water samples to identify the disease.
A similar situation occurred this winter in Uganda, where local media reported that five children had died in Bukomansimbi District from an unknown illness. However, the district health officer said it was likely acute malaria.
