MOSCOW (Sputnik) - NATO is taking an "increasingly active role" in the conflict in Ukraine, and this is "irresponsible" as no one knows how it will end, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on Wednesday.
Last week, Orban visited Russia for talks with Putin; the prime minister described his visit as a continuation of the "peace mission" he began with a trip to Kiev early last week.
"In a few minutes, the NATO Summit will begin here in Washington. NATO was established 75 years ago with the goal of protecting the security of its members. Today, however, it seems to be moving away from its original purpose, behaving more and more like a war organization," Orban said in an address posted on his X account.
The prime minister added that a sign of this shift is the fact that NATO is taking "an increasingly active role" in the conflict in Ukraine.
"In our opinion, this is dangerous and even irresponsible because no one can see how this will end or where we will end up," Orban added.
Media reported earlier in the week that Orban had sent confidential letters to European Council President Charles Michel and EU leaders detailing his recent trips to Kiev, Moscow, and Beijing. Orban reportedly said that Russia and China expected peace talks between Moscow and Kiev to start by the end of this year.
