Ghanaian authorities have recently stepped up surveillance at the country's ports amid a rise in illegal drug trafficking to Europe and the United States. In 2022, Ghana authorities saw a record increase in drug seizures, with a total of 59.9 kg of illegal substances confiscated.
Two British nationals have been arrested at the Kotoka International Airport in Accra after being accused of attempting to smuggle a massive amount of
cocaine to London.
The Ghana Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), in collaboration with the UK Crime Agency, seized about 166 kg of cocaine on Monday, estimated to have a street value of $6.48 million.
The suspects, identified as Hall Shamin Ethline and Graham Omar Adel, were scheduled to board a British Airways flight to London Gatwick Airport. Each of the two suspects was in possession of at least 83.44 KG of cocaine
along with their personal belongings, according to Ghanaian authorities.
"The suspects were scheduled to board a British Airways flight to Gatwick and checked in their luggage – 3 bags each, which were all found to contain 72 slabs of the suspected cocaine," the NACOC said in a statement.
The agency added, "
The busting of the suspected criminals reinforces the alertness of the NACOC without bias over nationality, signaling their commitment to the safety of travelers and preparedness to combat flight terminal threats relating to the possession of drugs."
The suspects are currently assisting NACOC with its investigation, according to the statement.
