Despite 'Barbaric, Unjustified' Western Sanctions, Russia Stands Firm, Activist Says
18:00 08.06.2024 (Updated: 12:05 10.06.2024) The United States and other countries have imposed comprehensive sanctions on Russia in response to Moscow's special military operation in Ukraine, including restrictions on the country's financial and energy sectors. Zimbabwe, as well, has been subject to sanctions from the US and the EU for more than 20 years.
Despite "barbaric, unjustified"
Western sanctions, Russia stands firm,
Head of the Association of Zimbabwean Students in Russia, a student at the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia named after Patrice Lumumba, Malachi Nyamukondiwa, told
Sputnik Africa."Zimbabwe was hit by these so-called inhuman and unjustified sanctions, the Western sanctions. And it survived. I can say that yes, there have been economic challenges in the past, but now we are moving at pace," he said on the sidelines of SPIEF 2024.
The student added that Moscow is "helping Zimbabwe to improve."
The student praised the launch of Radio Sputnik Africa in Cameroon, Mali, Nigeria, and Ethiopia, while noting that Western media "spread propaganda. "Africans "also need to know how Russia solves its problems," he highlighted.
Earlier, Zharare Martin, the Executive Director of Citizens Against Economic Sanctions in Zimbabwe, urged for a boost in trade and investment between Russia and Zimbabwe. He emphasized Russia's ability to assist Zimbabwe in
surmounting the obstacles posed by Western sanctions.
