CARACAS (Sputnik) - Russia is respectfully considering Venezuela's application to join the BRICS bloc of countries, but decisions on new memberships should be made by all current member states of the bloc, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin has told Sputnik.
Vershinin said on the sidelines of the opening of a regional session of the United Nations Special Committee on Decolonization, which was held from May 14 to 16 in Venezuela's Caracas, that he discussed the topic of Venezuela's accession to BRICS with the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry's leadership.
"We view Venezuela's position with great respect and consider it from the point of view of the highly strategic nature of our bilateral relations. But, naturally, it is about the organization, it is not only about the national position of Russia, about which I have just told you, it is about the fact that such decisions are taken jointly by all members of the organization," the Russian diplomat said.
In May 2023, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said that Caracas would like to become a member-state of BRICS to "take part in the construction of this new architecture and global policy." Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil said in November 2023 that the format of Venezuela's participation in BRICS is expected to be discussed at the group's summit in Russia in 2024.
