Hydrogen is an energy-rich element that doesn't heat the atmosphere when used as a fuel. It can be produced from a variety of sources, including water, natural gas, coal and biomass. Several African countries, such as South Africa, Morocco and Egypt, have already started developing a hydrogen industry, both for domestic use and for export.
The Mozambican government has set itself the goal of positioning the country as a major
hydrogen producer in southern Africa by 2030 as part of its Energy Transition Strategy, Radio Mozambique reported on Friday.
"Mozambique has great potential to develop a hydrogen industry thanks to its abundant resources. The country has abundant hydroelectric, natural gas, solar, and wind energy resources, which can support the production of all types of hydrogen, and in particular green hydrogen," according to state radio.
In 2024, Mozambique will define hydrogen production and consumption
targets, as well as the measures needed to achieve these targets, including the development of hydrogen infrastructure, the broadcaster said.
"Mozambique will work closely with its national and international partners to complete the development phase of its production and storage facilities and transport networks," it said.
