MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Brazilian counterpart, Mauro Vieira, have discussed the current situation in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict zone and possible further steps on de-escalation, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Sunday.
"An exchange of views was held on the current situation in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict zone and possible further steps towards de-escalation. The urgent need to ensure the protection of civilians and prevent the crisis from spreading to other countries in the region was emphasized," the ministry said in a statement.
Russia said that there was no alternative to settling the conflict except through the creation of an independent Palestinian state that would peacefully coexist with Israel, the statement read.
Both officials also discussed events at the United Nations Security Council, which is about to be chaired by Brazil, the statement added.
On October 7, Palestinian group Hamas launched a surprise large-scale rocket attack against Israel from the Gaza Strip, prompting Israel to declare a state of war the following day and launch retaliatory strikes. Both Israel and Palestine have reported over 1,000 deaths and thousands of injured as a result of the escalation.
