CAIRO (Sputnik) - On October 9 Israel ordered a complete blockade of the Gaza Strip, cutting off supplies of water, food and fuel, after Palestinian movement Hamas launched a large-scale attack against Israel.
The blockade of the Gaza Strip is a war crime, and Palestine demands to open safe corridors for the delivery of humanitarian aid, Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh said on Friday.
"The complete blockade of our people in the Gaza Strip is a war crime... We demand a security corridor to deliver aid to Gaza through the Rafah crossing," Shtayyeh said during a speech.
The prime minister aslo demanded "to put an end to the Israeli aggression" against the Gaza Strip.
The statement comes as on October 9 Israel ordered a complete blockade of the Gaza Strip, cutting off supplies of water, food and fuel, after Palestinian movement Hamas launched a surprise large-scale rocket attack against Israel over the weekend.
Both Israel and Palestine have reported over 1,000 deaths and thousands of injured as a result of the escalation.
On Friday, Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Walid Abu Haya told Sputnik that Israel was not prepared for "atrocities" committed by the Hamas movement on October 7.
"What happened on Saturday, October 7, 2023 was a surprise that we did not expect. Hamas surprised us with its brutality, and now the Israeli army is ready for all scenarios, and is fully prepared for any event or scenario,” the spokesman said.
Commenting on the escalation, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that while Israel "has the right to self-defense", Palestinian civilians should not suffer.
The Russian leader has also reiterated that the Palestinian people have the right to expect the creation of an independent state, just as they were promised.
