Torrential rains brought by storm Daniel hit Libya on September 10. This caused devastating flooding in the east of the country, where the cities of Susah and Derna were declared natural disaster zones.
The residents of the Libyan city Derna, which was hit by the floods, took to the streets, demanding the dissolution of the city's council and requiring Derna's recovery to be entrusted to international authority, Libyan newspaper Al-Marsad reported.
Along with these requests, the demonstrators asked to launch an investigation into those who ruled the city before the flood, according to the media.
In addition, the protesters reportedly ignited the house of the Derna mayor Abdulmenam Al-Ghaithi.
Osama Hammad, head of the parliament-appointed Libyan government based in Sirt, has dismissed the council and ordered an investigation into its members in connection with the floods, the newspaper noted.
On Sunday, Khaled Masoud al-Mudir, the justice minister of the parliament-appointed government, stressed that the country's authorities intends to find out and hold accountable those, whose malpractice led to the collapse of the dams due to heavy rains.
The death toll from the natural disaster exceeded 11,000, according to the head of the Libyan Red Crescent organization, Abdulsalam Al-Haj.
