Russia will continue to use its veto power at the UN Security Council (UNSC) to ensure the adoption of balanced and responsible resolutions, Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya said on Monday. The Russian ambassador expressed hope that resolution authors will duly work on reaching compromises in the future, particularly when those are easily achievable, rather than provoking useless confrontations. On September 1, the UNSC failed to extend for one year until August 31, 2024, the sanctions regime against Mali after Russia vetoed a Security Council draft resolution co-authored by France and the United Arab Emirates.Russia prepared an alternative draft resolution but it did not receive the needed number of votes to be adopted.
