Russia to Use Veto Power at UNSC to Ensure Adoption of Balanced Resolutions: Envoy to UN

UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) - The Russian envoy to UN made the remarks while addressing the UN General Assembly 3rd plenary meeting, 78th session, convened over its use of veto power to end the extension of the sanctions regimes imposed on Mali.
Russia will continue to use its veto power at the UN Security Council (UNSC) to ensure the adoption of balanced and responsible resolutions, Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya said on Monday.

"Russia will continue to adhere to its approach at the UN Security Council. We will use our veto so that this organization adopts equilibrated and responsible solutions and resolutions for the countries and people’s figuring on the daily agenda’s," Nebenzya said.

The Russian ambassador expressed hope that resolution authors will duly work on reaching compromises in the future, particularly when those are easily achievable, rather than provoking useless confrontations.

On September 1, the UNSC failed to extend for one year until August 31, 2024, the sanctions regime against Mali after Russia vetoed a Security Council draft resolution co-authored by France and the United Arab Emirates.
Russia prepared an alternative draft resolution but it did not receive the needed number of votes to be adopted.
