The previous general elections in Mozambique were held in 2019. The country's incumbent president Filipe Jacinto Nyusi then won in the first round, gaining 73% of the votes. The term of the president's office in Mozambique is five years.
The next general elections, as well as the elections of provincial governors and members of provincial assemblies, will be held in Mozambique on October 9, 2024, as reported by AIM, a local news agency.
The date was proposed by the National Election Commission of the country's Council of State, which counsels the president of the Republic, the agency stated. Nyusi was addressing a meeting of the Council dedicated to the announcement of the general elections.
According to the nation’s constitution, the country's president is ineligible to run for a third term. His party, the Liberation Front of Mozambique (FRELIMO), which has been in power since the country gained independence from Portugal in 1975, has not yet nominated a candidate for the highest post.
In the last parliamentary elections, the party received 74% of the vote.
The largest opposition force in the country is the Mozambican National Resistance (RENAMO) party.
According to reports, the east African nation can become one of the leading energy powers in sub-Saharan Africa. In recent years, the largest gas deposits on the continent, with a total recoverable volume of 2 trillion cubic meters of gas, have been discovered on the shelf of the Indian Ocean in the north of the country.

As for the security situation in the nation, Mozambique is currently fighting Daesh* terrorists.
In order to help the country’s government tackle the issue, SADC Mission in Mozambique (SAMIM) was launched on July 15, 2021, following approval by the Extraordinary SADC Summit held in Maputo, Mozambique’s capital.
The SAMIM seeks to help the nation "by neutralizing the terrorist threat and restoring security in order to create a secure environment" in Cabo Delgado Province's affected territories, the SADC website states.
According to the website, since the mission's start, some successes have been made, such as the regaining of villages and the capture of terrorist bases, weapons, and ammunition, which have sped up the process of restoring peace and stability in the area and the return of the local population to normal life.
In July this year, leaders and representatives of 11 southern African nations extended the SAMIM by 12 months at the virtually-held SADC Extraordinary Summit, the summit communique stated.
