The Russian city of Omsk hosted the 2023 Siberian International Marathon on August 3. Ahead of the large-scale sporting event, Sputnik Africa had an opportunity to talk to Kenyan athletes who shared their impressions of Russia and Siberia, as well as their expectations from the competition.
The main purpose of such major sporting events is to unite people regardless of their differences, as well as enhance friendly ties and unity between nations, Alex Kiprotich Trikoi, a Kenyan participant of the Siberian International Marathon, told Sputnik Africa.
"Sports create some relationship like friendship [...]. I believe that sports can unite and bring unity, especially between countries like Kenya and Russia," he said.
The Kenyan athlete reiterated that sport in general, and activities such as international marathons, contribute to the creation of strong ties between countries, to "make us interact with some other continents."
The marathon runner also debunked common myths about Russia's climate, saying that "the weather is not bad." He added that he really appreciates "the warm welcome" and was sincerely happy to be part of the event.
"Here in Russia, if I can compare the weather with that of ours, here summer is hotter," he noted.
His impressions of Russia are echoed by those of Eric Kering, another Kenyan athlete, who stated that he is happy and impressed to see the country and "meet good people."
He noted that it is a great pleasure for him to compete and run together with Russian athletes, who are known worldwide for being strong and friendly. Kering added that he is looking forward to healthy competition, elaborating that "nobody knows who will win until we cross the line."
"I've never been this far in the northern part of the world. I'm very impressed to run at the Siberian International Marathon, to feel conditions of running at this marathon. I'm impressed and motivated," he said.
Sarah Jerop Lagat, who is a professional runner, also expressed her happiness that she will compete "with the champions of Russia in marathon." She pointed out that even though they don't know who will eventually be the first to finish, they will do their best.
"There is this issue of sportsmanship [...]. It's very important for both sportsmen and women to meet and compete, that brings the unity between the countries. So it is a great pleasure to meet the Russian athletes and run together," Kering said.
The Siberian International Marathon is an official competition, a major sports and cultural event of international level, which is of great importance in the social life of the Omsk region. It brings together thousands of athletes from across the globe. The distances include 3 km, 10 km and the classic marathon - 42.195 km.
The winners of the marathon will receive 500,000 rubles ($5250) each. Moreover, a reward of 20,000 rubles ($210) awaits the winners among men and women in eight age groups.
