South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed an independent expert commission of three people to investigate the situation around the Russian ship Lady R, which docked last December in Cape Town, official spokesman for the president of South Africa, Vincent Magwenya, announced on Sunday.He stated on local radio that the commission has been given six weeks to gather the essential information and that afterwards, within two weeks, it should submit its report to the head of state.Magwenya noted that if the experts need more time to conduct the investigation, it will be given to them.According to reports, the commission is headed by Judge Phineas Mojapelo and also includes two lawyers. It aims to assess whether constitutional, legal, or other obligations of South Africa were observed during the stay of the Lady R vessel in national waters. The commission will also make recommendations on steps that may need to be taken as a result of the investigation.During the briefing, which took place on May 11, US Ambassador to South Africa Reuben Brigety claimed that during the Russian ship Lady R’s December 2022 call on the South African naval base at Simon’s Town, weapons and ammunition were loaded aboard the vessel.On the same day, the administration of the South African president stated that the US side had not yet provided any evidence to support its claims.On May 12, Brigety was summoned to the South African Foreign Ministry, where Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Naledi Pandor expressedher dissatisfaction with his actions. The ambassador admitted that he had crossed the line and apologized, South African Foreign Ministry spokesman Clayson Monyela said.In turn, South African Communications and Digital Technologies Minister and Chairman of the National Conventional Arms Control Committee Mondli Gungubele said South Africa had not given permission for the supply of weapons to Russia.The minister in the Office of the President of South Africa, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, on behalf of the South African government, categorically rejected allegations that weapons were loaded aboard the Lady R vessel with the knowledge of the authorities.
