In turbulent times, preserving cultural heritage is as relevant as ever. Today, as we are joined by Dirk Pienaar, a conservation and tourism manager at the Khomani San Community Property Association, we learn that heritage encompasses more than architecture and objects of cultural significance.
As the world marks African World Heritage Day on 5 May, Dirk Pienaar, a member of the Khomani San Community, one of the oldest cultures in the world, joins AfroVerdict host Viktor Anokhin, to talk about his people and the importance of preserving one's cultural heritage in the modern world.
The Khomani San are descendants of the San, who are
believed to be the "first people of southern Africa". They are known for their so-called “clicking languages”, such as N|u and Khoekhoegowab.
“The entire population of Khomani San is 1,096,” Pienaar says.
The tourism manager introduces us to his unique people and gives us his view on the importance of preserving indigenous cultures and nature.
“We need to understand the blow is going to come from us if we don’t connect deeper [with nature] - understand it deeper and respect it more.”
