At the site of the Russian-built Akkuyu nuclear power plant (NPP) in southern Turkiye, preparations have been underway for an official fuel delivery ceremony with the participation of the presidents of the Russian Federation and Turkiye, a Sputnik correspondent reported.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin are taking part in a videoconference for today's official ceremony marking the delivery of Russian-made nuclear fuel to power unit No. 1 of Turkiye's first nuclear power plant, Akkuyu, which is being built by the Russian state corporation, Rosatom.
According to a Sputnik corespondent, the event, which is taking place at the site of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant in the Mersin province's Gulnar district (southern Turkiye), sparked the interest of journalists not only from Russia and Turkiye, but also from a number of other countries.
According to Rosatom, the delivery of fresh nuclear fuel to the Akkuyu facility is a key development in the construction of this nuclear power plant, the largest project in the history of Russian-Turkish cooperation.
The nuclear fuel at the station will be placed in a fresh fuel storage facility. After that, the Akkuyu NPP will become a nuclear station, and Turkiye will become a country with nuclear power, Sputnik was informed earlier by the Akkuyu Nuclear Joint-Stock Company.
