As South Africa gears up to celebrate Freedom Day, which marks the first democratic elections held in South Africa on April 27, 1994, AfroVerdict host Viktor Anokhin sits down for an interview with the General Secretary of the South African Communist Party to hear the story of Chris Hani, one of the nation's most prominent anti-apartheid heroes.
The incumbent Secretary General of the South African Communist Party, Solly Afrika Mapaila, remembers his late comrade and South African hero, Chris Hani, in his struggle against apartheid and the values he passed down to the youth who adored him and cherish his triumphs.

"The day that we celebrate April 27 here in South Africa as Freedom Day, is the day it was enacted after his blood spilled on the floor. On that basis, we attribute April 27 to his blood, as well as the blood of many of the martyrs of the liberation struggle," Mapaila stresses.

Hani's legacy still resonates with people's aspirations, evoking a deep feeling of patriotism and the desire to oppose any sort of exploitation and oppression, Mapaila emphasized.
"He had left this enduring legacy of the continuation of [the] struggle, [the] formation of independence, [a] policy [of] sovereignty, [the] rejection of neocolonialism and [the] imposition of ideas by imperialist forces onto respective African countries, and also here in South Africa," the general secretary said.
