In an interview with the African Currents podcast, Samia Yaba Christina Nkrumah, founder and chairwoman of the Kwame Nkrumah Foundation, called for a renewed African awakening rooted in history, identity, and unity, arguing that the continent's real progress depends on more than political promises. It is imperative for Africans to first reorient their minds, reclaim their narrative, and draw strength from their own philosophies and indigenous knowledge systems before they can fully pursue the integration she believes Pan-Africanism demands. For her, the path forward is clear: Africa must move beyond fragmented development efforts and build the political, economic, social, and cultural cohesion needed to secure a stronger future.
"We are left with the biggest struggle of all, and that is for us to gain our economic independence and restore our dignity as Africans [...]. The first port of call is to reorient our minds. We have to own the narrative; we have to go back and understand our history and our condition today, of course, because there's a direct relationship [...]. The humanist principles of traditional African society: we need to recapture that, collectivism, and egalitarianism. The individual being part of a community, not separate. Africa's first orientation requires a whole delving into history and into seeing what happened and why it happened and how we can stop this cycle of exploitation, the cycle of death," Mrs. Nkrumah noted.
