Seven Candidates, Including President, Register for Congolese Elections: Reports

By February 28, the day the election campaign begins, the Congolese electoral commission must publish a list of candidates eligible to run.

The elections are scheduled for March 15.

Denis Sassou Nguesso has held the presidency continuously since 1997, having previously served as head of state from 1979 to 1992. A referendum held in 2015 amended the constitution, allowing the head of state to serve for three five-year terms instead of two seven-year terms. Furthermore, the age limit of 70 for candidates was abolished.
