New Contours of Sovereignty: Namibia’s Call for Solidarity & US Missile Failure in Nigeria

In a recent press conference in Moscow, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Namibian counterpart, Selma Ashipala-Musavyi, articulated a vision that resonates deeply across the Global South. In her response to the questions asked by a Sputnik Africa correspondent, the Namibian minister said that the voice of the Global South countries is a weapon to defend international law and the UN Charter, and the Global South must unite to support Venezuela amid US aggression.
“The voice of the Global South countries is a weapon to defend international law and the UN Charter. Venezuela is a "product of resistance against colonialism, and Namibia does not want a return to colonial subjugation. Our foreign policy stands on peaceful solution of disputes, and that is what we are going to continue to emphasize,” the minister highlighted.
On the diplomatic front, the episode analyzes the reported outcome of the US cruise missile operation in northern Nigeria, where a quarter of the sophisticated missiles failed to detonate, leaving rural areas littered with unexploded warheads. In a conversation with Sputnik Africa, Professor Abubakar Sadeeque Abba, scholar of political economy and development studies at the University of Abuja, provides an incisive critique, framing the event as a profound failure of intelligence and an analogy of foreign interventions that fail to understand both physical and political terrain.
“I believe it also shows that there is a huge gap between what America is telling the world and what America truly is in terms of might, in terms of capacity and in terms of capability. So it shows the technical limitations of the American system, technically and operationally [...] those particular measures that are fired that did not explode are clear manifestations of the failure of the system [...] it is a shame, it's a big shame on America as a superpower that they sent missiles, and it landed as if it was a drop of garbage on farmlands. It belittled their image, it belittled their dignity, it belittled their integrity as a superpower,” the professor stated.
