From tree-dwelling myths to cartoonish misconceptions, outdated stereotypes about Africa still flood global media. But on TikTok, a concerned African is striking back—mocking ignorance with sharp satire and viral charm, sparking a global rethink of what the continent truly represents.

Nigerian TikTok sensation is taking on false notions about Africa with humor and flair, using her viral skits to challenge ignorance and misinformation about the continent. With over 3.2 million followers, she blends sarcasm and wit to answer bizarre questions from viewers—like whether Africans live alongside wild animals or use mobile phones—turning social media into a powerful tool for education and cultural pride.

African Currents spoke to one of Nigeria’s most influential social media personalities, Charity Ekezie, about the impact of her work in challenging global misconceptions, and her mission to highlight African voices across different platforms.

"I believe that every question I receive is ridiculous because people are supposed to actually really just google or something or listen to...Like, find out things about Africa before you just go and assume. There're a lot of stereotypes out there, unfortunately, and it's not our fault. I feel like it's just the PR over there in the West is just horrible concerning Africa. So, the worst question I've actually received is: Do you still eat humans in Africa? And I was like, when did we eat humans? The question sat on my profile for, like weeks. I was like, how would I respond to this? I was trying to be sarcastic in this answer. But I was like, this is not the kind of question you're even going to be sarcastic about. This is offensive," Ekezie said.
