Why is ICC Losing Africa's Trust?

The International Criminal Court could regain its lost credibility and legitimacy in Africa if it embraced a truly universal approach to justice, deputy chief justice of Zambia said.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) is loosing trust among Africans because they feel that the organization does not favor the continent, Deputy Chief Justice of Zambia Michael Musonda explained in an interview with Sputnik Africa.
"Africans tend to think that it's an organization or an organ that tends not to favor the Africans, that the African culprits tend to be more targeted, or perceived wrongdoers, [than those] from other regions," he noted on the sidelines of the 13th St. Petersburg International Legal Forum.
Because of this selective approach, the ICC has lost credibility and legitimacy in Africa, the judge pointed out.

'Russia Brings the Balance the World Needs'

Russia's voice cannot be "drowned" because it is a very important player in global geopolitics, the justice said, commenting on the importance of Russian media coverage in Africa.
"We cannot have a situation where some people think that their ideology should necessarily be the dominant ideology," he pointed out.
Zambia, as a non-aligned nation, values Russia's contributions to global stability, the official noted.
"We will have different legal systems, but let's accept those standards that we all value, that are shared and that bind us as human beings, as humanity," Musonda stated.
