Vladimir Putin's proposal to hold direct peace talks with Ukraine in Turkey is an "important and necessary step," former Tunisian foreign minister Rafik Abdessalem stated to Sputnik.
The issue of security requires thorough negotiations to establish clear and balanced arrangements that ensure the region's security and stability, and address the root causes of the conflict, the ex-top diplomat noted.
"Europeans have the right to fear for their security, but Russia also has the right to defend itself and find guarantees to protect its national security, and not to be subjected to security, military and strategic threats," Abdessalem added.
