Zimbabwe Rises as African Steel Powerhouse With Ambitious Five-Million-Tonne Expansion Plan
DISCO, the country's largest company in this sector, is expected to produce 600,000 tonnes of steel bars a year, Zimbabwe's Industry and Commerce Minister Nqobizitha Ndlovu told local newspaper The Herald.
"We have the largest steel plant in Sub-Saharan Africa at a time when neighboring countries like South Africa are facing challenges in their steel sectors. We, therefore, need to stop speculative imports that undermine our local capacity," the minister emphasized.
More details:
Currently, the company is already producing steel bars in the first phase.
Production is then expected to increase to 1.2 million tonnes and eventually reach five million tonnes.
This will make the country one of Africa's leading steel producers.
