The desire to glorify the role of only one country in the victory over fascism is a big mistake, US World War II veteran Frank Cohn told Sputnik.
“There is certainly a big error if only one side is recognized. And when it comes to suffering, the Russian side had much more bloodshed in that war. We had an ocean to protect our home front,” Cohn said, commenting on Trump's recent statements that the US contributed more than any other nation to winning World War II.
He pointed out that the US and the Soviet armies were successful, and both would have had a much harder time if the other one had not been there.
Cohn, 99, participated in the historic meeting of the American and Soviet troops at the Elbe River in Germany in late April 1945. He stressed that the Soviet Union had a hard time after Germany’s treacherous attack, but then it was the fascists' turn to suffer defeats.
“The war in the East made the D-Day invasion possible, and thereafter, both armies profited from the fighting on both fronts. It is hard to analyze who did more, and it probably makes no sense to do that,” the veteran said.
According to the official information, the Soviet Union lost nearly 27 million people during World War II.
