On Friday, Benin's President Patrice Talon confirmed that he would not be a candidate for a third term, which is prohibited by the constitution.
"Once again, I repeat: no, I will not be a candidate," he said. "This question annoys me. I myself strengthened the Constitution to stipulate that no one may serve more than two terms in their lifetime."
He also said he was "careful" about the choice of his successor and intended to ensure that he did not aim to "undo the reforms accomplished over the past ten years."
