'We Want to Join AES': Ghanaians Living in Niger Welcome Their President Mahama in Niamey

On Sunday, Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama arrived in Niger's capital Niamey on a working visit to hold talks with his counterpart Abdourahamane Tiani. The two leaders held closed-door meetings and later an expanded bilateral meeting with their delegations in the presidential palace, the Ghanaian presidency said.

Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama, who arrived in Niger on Sunday, received a warm welcome from the country's nationals, as well as Ghanian citizens residing in Niger's capital Niamey, who told Sputnik Africa that they are willing that their homeland joins the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).

"Today we are happy, very, very happy because our president is arriving here. […] Regarding the AES, we hope that we too will join it to support Africa. And Africa will stand tall," Oumar Adam, a Ghanaian citizen residing in Niger, stated.

Ghanaians and Nigeriens "are doing well" as the nationals of the two countries are "the same because we are in West Africa," Adam emphasized.

"Truly, it is a joy for us Ghanaians today to come and welcome our president John Dramani [Mahama]. We support the AES. We support the AES because we are brothers. From the beginning, we have supported the AES," another Ghanaian expat Vincent Tony pointed out, expressing hope that Ghana, a member of Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), would join the alliance.

Following Mahama's meeting with his Nigerien counterpart Abdourahamane Tiani, the Ghanaian presidency said in a statement that the discussions focused on enhanced security cooperation in the Sahel and West African region to combat terrorism, improved and unimpeded trade between the two countries, and strengthening bilateral ties.

"President Tiani raised the need for collaboration and recognition of the Alliance of Sahel States by the ECOWAS, with President Mahama emphasizing the need for greater collaboration to fight terrorism, which threatens not only the Sahel region but also countries further down towards the coast," read the statement.
