Russia, US Request Closed UN Security Council Consultations on Situation in Syria, Envoy Says

UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) - On Thursday, clashes between the security forces of Syria's new authorities and supporters of the republic's former president Bashar al-Assad reportedly broke out in the western provinces Latakia and Tartus.

Russia and the United States have requested closed consultations with the United Nations Security Council on the situation in Syria, with Moscow expecting them to take place on Monday, Russian Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Dmitry Polyanskiy said on Sunday.

"Russia and the United States have requested urgent closed consultations with the UN Security Council regarding the violence against civilians in western Syria. We expect the Danish presidency of the Council to schedule them for 10:00 New York time [14:00 GMT] on Monday," the Russian diplomat said on Telegram.

Meanwhile, UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) on Saturday accused Syria's new authorities of conducting military operations that resulted in the deaths of around 340 people, including women and children.
