Kenyan emergency teams, including defense forces and volunteers, are working to contain wildfires spreading across major wildlife sanctuaries and protected areas amid a severe dry spell, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) said in a statement.
"Multiple parks are affected amid dry season fire outbreaks. Kenyan emergency teams continue to combat wildfires across multiple protected areas, with new developments underscoring both progress and persistent challenges," the statement read.
Fires have erupted in several locations across the country, including Nairobi National Park, Aberdare National Park, Mount Kenya ecosystem, Ruma National Park, South Island National Park, and Mount Elgon National Park.
According to the KWS, the strategies to curb further outbreaks include:
Enhanced aerial and ground patrols in high-risk zones;
Rapid deployment of firefighting units, including helicopters;
Collaboration with communities, county governments, and partners to bolster response networks;
Creation of firebreaks and cut lines to isolate future fires.
