Kenya and Somalia are engaged in discussions to conclude a trade agreement aimed at eliminating non-tariff barriers.
The finalization of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Promotion of Trade Cooperation is a crucial step to facilitate smoother trade relations, Kenya's Trade Cabinet Secretary Lee Kinyanjui said at the Somalia-Kenya Trade Week.
He also highlighted the importance of a joint trade committee to address non-tariff barriers.
Nation Media Group Chairman Wilfred Kiboro advocated for increased trade, emphasizing Somalia's growing economy and investment potential in agriculture, fisheries, manufacturing, and infrastructure. He pointed to Somalia's vast coastline, which supports a significant fisheries sector and maritime trade opportunities.
Both Somalia and Kenya should focus on border security and trade facilitation, improving customs and boosting trade regulations, Kinyanjui said.
