Ethiopia has announced an ambitious target to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 68.8% by 2030, local media reported, citing Minister of Planning and Development, Fitsum Assefa.
Speaking at a consultative meeting on the role of the private sector in climate change solutions and green development, Fitsum Assefa reiterated the country’s commitment to implementing its climate resilience strategy.
The minister reportedly emphasized that Ethiopia has integrated climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies across key sectors such as agriculture, energy, industry, transport, and urban development. She also highlighted the nation's long-term goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 in line with global climate commitments under the Paris Agreement.
"There is no segment of society that remains unaffected by climate change, including the private sector. It plays a significant role, both as a contributor to the problem and as a key player in providing solutions," Fitsum Assefa was quoted as saying.
She stressed the importance of private sector engagement in financing and implementing green projects, adopting sustainable business models, and investing in innovative climate solutions.
Recognizing previous challenges, the minister acknowledged that private sector participation had been limited due to a lack of supportive environments.
"To address this, my ministry has created a working group focused on improving coordination and strengthening partnerships. Our ongoing efforts are centered on climate finance to maximize national benefits," she explained, as cited by media.
