The M23 rebels reportedly gained control of the city despite a unilateral ceasefire recently declared by the movement.
Nyabibwe is located 28 kilometers from the city of Kalehe, the administrative center of the Kalehe territory in the South Kivu province, the news portal reported.
Last week, the Congolese rebel alliance that includes the M23 group announced the capture of Goma, the capital of the North Kivu province. The head of the UN peacekeeping mission, Bintou Keita, said that the M23 rebels and Rwandan troops had entered the outskirts of Goma. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres called on Rwanda to withdraw its troops from the DRC.
The M23 armed group resumed an offensive in the eastern DRC in recent weeks after the failure of Angolan mediation efforts in 2022. The Congolese authorities have accused neighboring Rwanda of supporting rebels, urging it to withdraw troops from the country. Rwanda has denied the accusations.
