Russian Companies Are Exploring Possibility of Localizing Their Production in Ethiopia

Trade and economic ties between Russia and Ethiopia are governed by the 1999 Agreement on Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation and the Trade Agreement. In 2021, bilateral trade reached $225.2 million, a significant 359.2% increase from 2020, according to the Federal Customs Service of Russia.

Russian companies from various fields are exploring the possibility of localizing their production in Ethiopia, including fertilizer production and car assembly, said Pavel Kalmychek, Director of the Department of Bilateral Cooperation at the Ministry of Economic Development.
"Ethiopia is one of the largest consumer markets in Africa," he said.

He added that joint Russian-Ethiopian projects, as well as the development of relations in other areas of cooperation, will be considered within the framework of the planned events of the Russian-Ethiopian intergovernmental commission on economic, scientific and technical cooperation and trade.
