"The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms ongoing advances by the M23 in North Kivu. […] They demanded that the ongoing offensive and advances towards Goma [in the North Kivu province of eastern DRC] immediately stop," Bendjama pointed out.
"[The UNSC members] condemned the ongoing flagrant disregard for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the DRC, including the unauthorized presence in the eastern DRC of external forces […] and demanded that these forces withdraw immediately […]. They urged all parties to scrupulously abide by the ceasefire," the statement read.
"[The UNSC members] urged Rwanda and the DRC to return to diplomatic talks to achieve a lasting and peaceful resolution of the protracted conflict in the region, including by addressing respective issues pertaining to the presence of Rwanda Defense Forces in the eastern DRC and DRC support to the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) respectively," it read.
"Council members also stressed the importance of resuming consultations under the Nairobi Process under the guidance of former President Uhuru Kenyatta to address the protracted issue of armed groups, including the M23, operating in the DRC, and to identify pathways to peace and stability in the region," Bendjama noted.
"They [UNSC members] called for an end to reported GPS jamming and spoofing and the deployment of Surface to Air Missiles, which threaten the safety and security of UN peacekeepers and impede the implementation of their Protection of Civilians mandate," Bendjama pointed out.
