In 2024, Zimbabwe's raw milk production reached a record high of 114.7 million liters, an increase of 14.9% from the previous peak of 100 million liters nearly a decade ago.
The increased milk production, which surpassed the national target of 113 million liters in 2024, was due to both private and government investments and better farming techniques, according to the Dairy Services Department.
Zimbabwe's milk production peaked at 100 million liters in 2005 and then declined due to the country's socio-economic transformation, droughts, and a lack of funding, forcing milk processors to import powdered milk.
With a production goal of 150 million liters of raw milk, Zimbabwe seeks to be a regional dairy leader. While government programs like Command Livestock, PSP, and LRGP support the sector, challenges persist, including power outages, high feed costs, limited financing, and smuggling, according to the local media.
