Zimbabwe's government is ready to amend the constitution to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa's term past 2028, following the country's ruling party Zanu PF's resolution and pending further instructions, Justice, Legal, and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi said.
The possibility of extending Emmerson Mnangagwa's term to 2030 exists, aligning with the people's will, Ziyambi noted, stressing that amendments would be made when instructed.
He highlighted Zimbabwe’s democratic principles, stating that if the public desires an extension of the president’s tenure, it would be done. Despite President Mnangagwa’s willingness to step down, Ziyambi said legal steps would be taken to extend his term if the people wished it.
At its Bulawayo conference last year, Zanu PF resolved to extend the president's term to allow him to complete ongoing development projects.
The Citizens Coalition for Change, the main opposition, also backed the proposal to extend Mnangagwa’s term.
