The Swedish armed forces and the Saab company have developed a drone "swarm" project that will autonomously carry out assigned tasks, Swedish Defense Minister Pal Jonson said on Monday.
"Today we can present a project based on a completely new type of drone swarm, which will also be tested during the Arctic Strike exercise … It [project] is based on drones of different sizes forming swarms and autonomously solving assigned tasks," Jonson said at the annual People and Defense Conference, as broadcast by Swedish news outlet Aftonbladet.
The new technology will be adopted within a year, he said. The "swarm" drones can share tasks and be used to conduct reconnaissance, locate and identify the enemy, the minister added.
The drones can also recharge their batteries and return to their mission, Jonson said.
