"President Joseph Aoun has authorized Nawaf Salam to form Lebanon's new government," the statement said.
The United Nations welcomes the formation of a new government in Lebanon and views it as a positive development, spokesman Stephane Dujarric said on Monday.

"We very much welcome these reports, and I think it's another sign of the positive political trajectory we have seen in Lebanon over the past few days," Dujarric told journalists when asked if there is any UN statement on the latest appointment of a new Lebanese prime minister.

The UN is pleased that Lebanon got a new president and now also a government, Dujarric added.
Lebanon's parliament voted last week to elect army commander Joseph Aoun as the country's new president. Aoun secured the support of 99 out of 128 lawmakers. The presidency had been vacant since October 2022, following the end of Michel Aoun's term.
