On 15 April 2023, armed clashes between the Rapid Support Forces and the regular army in the Sudanese capital Khartoum were reported. Later, the fighting between the military forces spread to other Sudanese regions.

The Sudanese army, supported by allied groups, announced the recapture of Wad Madani, the capital of Al-Jazira state in central Sudan, from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group, the government spokesman and Minister of Culture and Information Khalid Al-Aiser reported.
"Our forces are currently working on clearing the remnants of the rebels inside the city," the spokesperson of the Sudanese Armed Forces said in a statement.
The army reported earlier in the day inflicting heavy losses on the RSF, following an advance on the city.

The army's intention is to continue advancing until all the Al-Jazira state and ultimately Sudan is liberated, the commander of the Sudanese army's special operations in the Sennar state, bordering the Al-Jazira state, Fath Al-Alim Al-Shoubli told an Al Jazeera correspondent.
On Thursday, the Sudanese army reclaimed the Al-Hajj Abdullah city in the Al-Jazira state.
