A Christmas Eve prayer session at Agule Pentecostal Assemblies of God (PAG) Church in Ocuko Village turned deadly when a reportedly demon-possessed man kicked a pastor during an exorcism. The pastor, John Michael Ekamu, 52, succumbed to his injuries on Christmas Day, local media reported on Thursday.
According to the East Kyoga Regional Police Commander, Damalie Nachuha, the suspect, Osagani, 30, was brought to the church by his father, Simon Ogwang, on Tuesday. Ogwang believed his son was suffering from demonic possession and sought spiritual intervention. During the prayer session, Osagani reportedly kicked Pastor Ekamu, causing him to fall. Despite the incident, prayers continued, and Pastor Ekamu, along with some worshippers, stayed overnight at the church.
On Christmas morning, the pastor collapsed on the pulpit during prayers. Worshipers suggested taking him to a health center, but Ekamu refused, declaring, "The devil has been defeated." As his condition deteriorated, he was eventually taken to Serere Health Center IV. Medical examinations revealed cuts to his pancreas. Despite attempts to save him, he passed away during surgery around 3 pm.
The body of Pastor Ekamu was taken to Soroti Regional Referral Hospital for a postmortem examination.
The police have since launched an investigation into the incident, and the suspect remains in custody.
