The death toll from Cyclone Chido that hit the French overseas department of Mayotte last week has risen to 35 from 31 reported earlier, the BFMTV broadcaster reported on Friday, citing data from the country’s interior ministry.
Moreover, 67 people were heavily injured in the cyclone, the report read.
French President Emmanuel Macron declared national mourning in France next Monday in connection with the disaster.
The French Meteorological Service said earlier that the storm was the strongest storm to hit Mayotte in more than 90 years. French public-sector reinsurer CCR said that the damage caused by the natural disaster in Mayotte will cost insurers between 650 and 800 million euros (between $674 and $829 million).
The cyclone also reportedly affected Mozambique, where it passed last Sunday, killing at least 45 people, and Malawi, where it hit the country on Monday, with at least 13 people declared dead.
