An oil spill has occurred in the Niger Delta region of the Niger Delta terminal of the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), a statement by Edward Osagie, spokesman of the Nigerian Maritime Administration And Safety Agency (NIMASA), has revealed.
According to the statement, the incident was caused by a ruptured pipeline in Rivers State, Nigeria. Shell "promptly shut down the affected pipeline and deployed containment booms to protect the neighboring communities."
"The agency is collaborating with SPDC and other relevant stakeholders to assess the extent of the spill and determine necessary follow-up actions," Osagie said.
The official added, "Members of the public are advised to remain calm as NIMASA is committed to mitigating the impact of the spill and restoring affected areas."
According to him, the agency is actively monitoring the situation from an emergency operations center and working with stakeholders to assess the extent of the spill.
