The East Africa Electric Highway project enables trial power transmission from Kenya to Tanzania, local media reported.
The move follows a successful launch of the Ethiopia-Kenya power link, paving the way for a fully operational regional grid and solidifying Ethiopia's role as a renewable energy hub in East Africa.
The East Africa Electric Highway is expected to boost regional cooperation by providing reliable, affordable, renewable energy. Ethiopia is likely to increase green electricity exports, generating an estimated $200 million annually and supporting sustainable economic growth while advancing regional environmental goals.
The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), Africa's largest hydroelectric project, is a key driver of Ethiopia's renewable energy exports, supplying surplus power to neighboring countries and solidifying its regional energy leadership. Combined with the East Africa Electric Highway, the GERD if expected to generate over 6,000 MW of electricity.
