The Electoral Commission of Ghana declared on Monday that former President John Dramani Mahama won the presidential election with 56.55% of the votes.
"I have the singular honor as the returning officer of the 2024 presidential election to declare his Excellency John Dramani Mahama as the winner of the 2024 presidential election and the president-elect of the Republic of Ghana with a total percentage of 56.55%," Electoral Commission Chairwoman Jean Mensa told a briefing.
As many as 12 candidates ran for Ghana's top job, with the leaders of the two rival parties, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mahama and Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, respectively, being the main contenders. Incumbent President Nana Akufo-Addo of the NPP could not join the presidential race as he is currently serving his second, and final, term.
Bawumia admitted his electoral defeat and congratulated Mahama on his victory, the GhanaWeb news portal reported.
